Sofitel Bayerpost, Munich
Post office and hotel are two concepts which can scarcely be seen in connection with each other. However,
this was exactly our task for this five-star hotel in Munich; how can an old, historic, listed building which
was once a royal post office be converted into a modern luxury hotel?
The historic condition should remain visible and tangible; nevertheless, the guest wants to experience the
comfortable luxury of a modern, top-class hotel. The historical post office building was used as a shell for
the modern building and is still visible in selected places inside. We used the discrepancy between atmosphere
and former use to develop a creative concept: soft and hard, rough and smooth, light and dark, classic and
modern.
The homely and intimate design of the rooms is set against the lively and open lobby area. Soft and flowing
fabrics contrast with hard, angular materials. Light and shadow stand in counterpoint.
