InterContinental, Cologne

With its "light and shadow" design concept the Cologne Intercontinental uses lighting both to produce a creative work atmosphere in communications environments and to bring about evolving shadow effects in certain areas. Large, low suspension lamps in the lobby mark the location of groups of chairs. A large spiral staircase situated within a translucent lantern of fabric links lobby with first floor. Focussed lighting also features in the restaurant "Maulbeers" in the form of oversized lights and a mirrored wall that reflects images ad infinitum. The Kaminzimmer, or Fireplace Room, with its stuco ceiling and ancient 16th century fireplace, provide a counterpoint to the new interior architecture. Floor-to ceiling mirros in the rooms convey the impression of space, the painted bedsteads a sense of cosy security. An elliptical writing table that turns on its axis is both a work surface and a vantage point from which to admire Cologne and ist cathedral.
