Radisson SAS, Cologne

To chose this hotel is to step onto a stage whose scenery is constantly changing. The floor of the playfully designed lobby of the Radisson SAS Köln is a pattern of squares interspersed with stripes. Chairs, sofas and Ottomans by Minotti and Frigerio have been positioned as if at random. The reception gives the impression of being an elongated sculpture of wood and stone. The smooth, gleaming counter of varnished jacaranda is in direct and stimulating contrast to the rough surface of the counter´s base, a weathered plinth of Jura limestone. This is a design concept repeated throughout the hotel. Similary widespread in a variety of forms is the plate glass, especially prominent in the guestroom. Ist satin coated surface provides a soft, slightly blurred reflection of colours and materials. Reflected light gets trapped in the dark red velvet drapes and headboard of the bed, there to remain in suspended illumination.
